Helsinki
Late by Northern European standards, Helsinki was founded in 1550, while it belonged to Sweden. During its history, it also belonged to Russia. It's evident when you walk around the city that both powers had influence over its architecture.

Helsinki's neo-Classical architecture is largely the work of architect Carl Ludvig Engel, who planned the town center. His use of light granite gave the city the name "White City of the North." His buildings were generally low and sprawling, except this Great Cathedral, which is colossal (note the size of the tourists next to it.)
Esplanade Park stretches across the main part of town, and it's the venue for an exhibition of sculptures by Spanish artist Manolo Valdés. The sculptures were inspired by a 17th century painting by Diego Velázquez.
The fortress of Suemomenlinna was built by the ruling Swedes about 250 years ago. At the time, it had the largest drydock in the world. Even today, it's impressive.
Finland has always had excellent, if sometimes cautious, relations with Russia, because of their proximity and the high volume of trade. Still, we didn't expect to pass a Russian navy ship in Helsinki's harbor.
The Uspensky Cathedral was built as a Russian Orthodox church in 1868, but now serves the Finnish Orthodox community. The onion domes are coated in gold and they shone brightly over Katajanokka Island and our boat during our two stays in Helsinki.
